HOW AN INTERCOOLER WORKS

An intercooler is a heat exchanger. That means there are two or more elements that don't physically touch each other but a transfer of heat or energy takes place between them.

At wide open throttle and full boost, the hot compresse air coming from a turbocharger is probably between 120 and 200 degree celsius depending on the turbo, boost pressure, outside air and temperature. This needs to be cooled down, which reduces its volume so more air molecules can be forced into the cylinder to avoid engine damage.
